Popsicles Tower Project Handout

Important Concepts/Vocabulary

Symmetry:  Similarity of form or arrangement on either side of a dividing line or plane.

Beam: A horizontal building element.

Column:  A vertical building element.

Joint:  A place or part where two things or parts are joined.

Dead Load:  The weight of a structure itself.

Live Load:  The weight of anything on a structure.

Gravity:  On earth it is a vertical or downward force that is acting on everything including the towers being built by students.  This force pulls all objects on the earth’s sphere toward the center of the earth.

Center of Gravity:  The spot at which the mass of an object seems to be concentrated and weight is being pulled directly down on by gravity.  It is also the balance point for an object.

Stability: The capacity of an object to return to equilibrium or to its original position after having been displaced by some force.  For an object to be stable and remain upright its center of gravity must be above its base.  As the center of gravity is moved away from the center of its base then it becomes less stable and easier to tip over.  When the center of gravity is no longer located above the base then the structure cannot stand upright.  A center of gravity that is low and close to the base also makes a structure very stable.

Compression:  The stress/force felt when an object is being pushed together (inward).
Tension:  The stress/force felt when an object is being pulled apart (outward).

Torque:  It is a force that tends to rotate or turn things.  To calculate the torque, you just multiply the force by the distance from the center.

Each team has to prepare 3 to 4 pages report include the following items

1)      Draw a structure of the tower that will be built by the team.

2)      A list of at least four different functions the tower will feature.

3)      A brief 4 to 5 line paragraph that describes and justifies the functions chosen.

4)      A cover page of the report which includes the submission date, team name, team members.

Notes:

-           The materials will be given ONLY to team that submit the report on the due date.

-           Reports MUST be submitted in hard copy form, no softcopy will be accepted.

Due Date: Wednesday May 1st

In this project you will work in-teams to research, design, build and decorate a popsicle tower that is structurally sound. Students will design a tower as well as prepare a proposal that describes the function and purpose of their building. For example, is it a restaurant, a business complex,  or a mall? Why is this structure needed? The building structure should also be aesthetically appealing. Also, each team must prepare and present a poster board that reflects their proposal and prototype design. The teams will build their towers during the school day at times to be announced.

Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF)

Assalam Alaikum Dear parents

I hope you had a nice time your family  during the long week-end. Please read the following message from the ORSF co-chair Jovan Groen. It contains important information regarding the Ottawa regional science fair.

Tr. Amina

Dear Participants,
Congratulations on your participation in the upcoming Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF). We are proud of your dedication to science and wish you the best of luck this coming weekend. With only a few short days before the fair, we wanted to share some key information that will help to make the 52nd annual ORSF a positive and memorable experience for everyone.
1) The entire fair is taking place at the Raven's Nest Athletics Complex on the Carleton University Campus, for a map, please see http://www2.carleton.ca/campus/. For parking, it is best to use lot P5 directly beside the gym. Unfortunately, this is a pay lot on both Friday and Saturday. Be sure to advise whoever is coming with you to purchase a parking ticket.
2) All project set-ups take place on Friday, April 5th between 4pm and 6:30pm at the Raven's Nest Gymnasium, inside the Physical Recreation Center (AC on the map). You MUST bring your four digit project number with you. Check-in takes place at the ORSF registration desk by telling us your project number (e.g. 1304). You will then proceed with your project set-up and safety inspections. You can leave after you have your safety inspection sheet signed.
New this year, we will have various representatives from Let's Talk Science showcasing demonstrations at the back of the gymnasium beginning at 4pm and culminating in a Chemistry Magic Show to be held at the Bell Theatre in the Minto Centre at 6:30pm. All participants and their families are welcome to attend.
Please note that NO SATURDAY PROJECT SETUP will be permitted. The Gymnasium will be locked overnight, but any easily removable valuables (laptops etc.) should either be locked or brought in for 9:15am on Saturday morning. Projects will be pre-judged between 7:30 AM and 9:15 AM, no admission into the gym is allowed at this time.
If you haven't already done so, be sure to complete your self-nomination for the many ORSF special awards. This year's deadline is Sunday, March 31st at midnight.
We look forward to seeing you next weekend!
Best regards,
Jovan Groen
